Tutorly
Online learning for teenagers
7 min read
Overview
Few months into the pandemic, I noticed how my cousin who was preparing for his senior school leaving certificate examinations struggled with online school and communication with teachers. The pandemic had imprisoned us in our homes and students were one of the most affected groups.

This situation birthed the idea of Tutorly; an online learning platform for students preparing for examinations such as WAEC,NECO, and JAMB. The idea was crafted with an aim to ease dependence on lesson teachers and develop a system where students can learn easily and parents can monitor their progress.

Once the product idea came to me, I shared it with my cousin and his group of friends. They were preparing for their most important exam yet and were forced to study from home. I was met with concerns as I spoke to them and noted the most repetitive issues;
  • Difficulties in understanding teachers and lessons
  • Distraction during classes
  • Inadequate attention from teachers
From our conversation, I was able to provide context to this product idea and note the problems to be solved with it.

Research
Senior secondary school students are the target audience for Tutorly. I decided to do some research on teenagers between 14-19 so as to understand how they engage with products. I noted a few interesting points:
  • Teenagers would abandon a boring product
  • Complicated words should be avoided
  • Teenagers dislike condescending content
  • They mostly use mobile phones to view content
This gave me some insights into the behavioral patterns of new age teenagers and combined with the information gathered from my discussion with them, I came up with user personas as shown below;

Defining Goals
I conducted more research and decided on the route I wanted to take;A web-based product that helps students study from the comfort of their homes. I identified a couple of goals for this product and they are listed here:
  • Students can access a wide range of learning resources to assist lessons from school at their own pace
  • Students can practice past questions and access valid solutions
  • Students can take lessons in groups and encourage each other
  • Students have access to the platform any time and any where
This gave me some insights into the behavioral patterns of new age teenagers and combined with the information gathered from my discussion with them, I came up with user personas as shown below;
Designs
I originally designed Tutorly in 2020 when I started learning Design.  Redesigning it in 2022 has helped highlight how much I have grown as a designer. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed designing it.
Onboarding
I made onboarding as simple as possible. The registration process for new users is designed to be fun
and precise. Users fill in account details, select a plan, choose a learning track and customize their profiles
in the most interesting way.
Meet Demilade
I introduced a brand personality called Demilade to help users navigate around Tutorly easily. He walks them through a short tour that highlights the cool features of the project.
Dashboard
This view summarizes important features of Tutorly. An overview section to track progress and quick links to subjects and user groups.

Learning
This view is the most important as this is where learning is done. Students can read notes on a particular topic or watch a video resource. There is also a discussion tab where comments or questions can be sent.
Past Questions
Practicing past questions is really important to students preparing for final exams. I added filtering by subjects, year and exam type- JAMB, WAEC or NECO. Users can also see the percentage completion of each subject in their chosen track.
Group Learning
Users can create groups and learn with friends. They can also set learning goals and compete in the quizzes each subject offers,

Old Designs
As mentioned earlier, I started the designs for Tutorly in 2020 during the compulsory lockdown. Some screens are shown below; I changed the color scheme and tone in the newer iteration because I have learnt and am still learning how to be a better designer.
Conclusion
Thank you for your patience so far. Redesigning Tutorly was an interesting process; I enjoyed going back to my old notes and conducting more research to design a better iteration. I particularly enjoyed checking for color palettes on coolors.co and reading about teenager’s UX on nngroup.com.
Thank you for time
